There are many fairs and festivals celebrated in Pakistan all over the year. One of those is the Mela Chiraghan. It is celebrated in Lahore in the last week of March.
Mela Chiraghan can be rightly called a second biggest festival of Lahore after the Urs of Data Sahib. This fair is also known as the festival of lights. This festival is celebrated to pay the tribute to Shah Husain. On the occasion his ‘Kafis’ are sung. It is also said that he is the one who introduced ‘Kafis’ as one of the genre of poetry. The devotees of Shah Sahib sing his ‘Kafis’ with devotion because they are mystic verses with a strong spiritual message in them. The festival of Mela Chiraghan is celebrated for three days. People from all over the Pakistan go to Lahore to attend it.
Shah Husain is famous for his spiritual view in ‘Kafis’ but the reason of his fame is also the way he used to sing his own of ‘Kafis’ display a free flow of thousands. On Mela Chiraghan the devotees dance on the drum beats. The drum is beaten up by the professionally trained people who beat it in such a rhythm that the whole crowd seems to whirlan its beat. The ‘Kafis’ sung on the festival are the real entertainment for the people of Punjab.
