Pakistani dance

Like music, Pakistani dances are also the important part of Pakistani lives. Dances not only for entertainment but also includes people’s life because in Pakistan dances are ceremonial and celebratory in nature. In Pakistan, dances are the traditional part of lives. Dances are the way to tell stories and convey some messages without speaking a word. There are different types of dances in Pakistan and are the combinations of different influences. Following are some of the important dance forms in Pakistan and their importance in the lives of the people.

Classical dance: kathak is the classical form of dance in Pakistan. Kathak is derived from the world Katha which means story. In this dance with the body movement, facial expression the performer tells a story by synchronization with music. This dance is commonly performed in theaters.

Folk dance: on the other hand folk dance is seasonal and celebratory in nature. This dance is usually performed on wedding, child birth; this is the simplest form of dance. There is different understanding of the folk dance in different areas of Pakistan; this dance is performed on folk music that is produced by special instruments.

Modern dance: Pakistan is a very traditional country. Military rule forbid dances presented on national media. There was a time when classical dances were performed only in private houses of higher class citizen. Then time has changed and young girls of middle class are preparing for classical dances. Now classical dance is the important part of theaters. Dances are the most common and an important part of any Pakistani festival.

Dhammal: One of the form of dance and this is popular dance form among Sufis. This dance is usually performed by high stepping and hands moved up over the head and the index figure is pointing at the sky this form of dance is called dhammal.
