Severe indiscriminate shelling killed 13 Syrians on Monday in the Sunni district of Baba Amro located in Syria’s third largest city and flashpoint Homs, said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said in a statement.
Homs is badly hit and presenting the view of a war hit area, with gun- battles occurring everyday between heavily armed security forces and lightly armed protesters.
“The shells fired from heavy machineguns in the Baba Amro district caused 13 deaths on Monday morning and dozens of injuries. The situation is frightening and the shelling is the most intense of the last three days”, the group said, citing activists on the ground.
According to the United Nations human rights chief, more than 5,000 people have been killed in the uprising in Syria.
New bloody clashes between security forces and defectors are reported daily in different parts of Syria.
Damascus explains it is fighting against armed terrorist gangs or militants who want to destabilize the country.
The uprising in Syria is a part of broader popular protest movement that led to the toppling of heads in Egypt, Libya, Tunisia and Yemen.
