Islamic Virtues: Repentance

No matter how hard we try to refrain from committing sins, yet we being human beings are prone to err. The only innocent human beings were Prophets of Allah. So does that mean that we should leave all hope of earning Allah’s favor as we commit sins from time to time? The simple answer is ‘No’, we should repent, asking forgiveness of Allah; making intention of not repeating the sin. However, if we do commit it again, don’t despair. Again repent and beg for forgiveness but this should not be limited to your words only, your heart and soul should be together when asking for forgiveness.

Our Prophet (SAW)said:” Allah,Blessed and Exalted is He, says, ‘O son of Adam, as long as you call on Me and ask from Me, I shall forgive you for what you have done(sins) and think nothing of it.

O son of Adam, even if your sins were to reach up to the clouds in the sky, and then you were to ask for My forgiveness, I would forgive you and think nothinng of it.

O son of Adam, even if you were to come to Me with sins nearly as great as the earth, and then you were to meet Me (i.e. after death), not worshiping anything besides Me, I would bring you forgiveness nearly as great as the earth.”

The Prophet (SAW) also said:” All children of Adam are prone to make mistakes, but the best of those who do wrong are those who constantly repent ( with pure intention of never repeating the sins and asking for forgiveness of Allah).”

(Ibn Maja, Tirmidhi)

How to ask for forgiveness:

There are many masnoon duas for asking for forgiveness, one is mentioned below:
