Islam is not simply a set of prayers and rituals. It is a complete life style. It has well defined rules for every sphere of life which helps in spending the life in this world in the exact way that Allah wants us to.
An important virtue in Islam that has been greatly stressed is truthfulness. Islam demands from his followers truthfulness in every aspect of life; truthfulness in faith, in our speech and in our dealings. The importance of truth in Islam is highlighted by the following hadiths:
1.Abdullah bin Mas`ud (RAU) reported: The Prophet (SAW) said, “Truth leads to piety and piety leads to Jannah. A man persists in speaking the truth till he is enrolled with Allah as a truthful. Falsehood leads to vice and vice leads to the Fire (Hell), and a person persists on telling lies until he is enrolled as a liar”.’
2.Hasan bin `Ali (RAU) said: I remember (these words) from Messenger of Allah (SAW): “Give up what is doubtful to you for that which is not doubtful; for truth is peace of mind and falsehood is doubt”.
Imam Bukhari, the compiler of the most authentic collection of hadiths exercised extreme care in this regard. Once after a long journey he reached a person. This person had memorized a number of hadiths and Imam Bukhari had traveled to seek them. When Imam Bukhari saw him, he was trying to catch his running horse by showing it as if he had oats in his shirt for it. Imam Bukhari asked him:” Do you have oats in your shirt?”
The man replied:”No I don’t. I am only doing so that the horse comes to me.”
Imam Bukhari said:”Any person who is lying to the animals, I would not take any hadith from him” and he turned back and left him. This incident shows how we should value truthfulness in our every day life.
