Have you ever considered laziness a sin? If not, you really should. Our Prophet (SAW) disliked laziness very much and used to recite duas to be safe from the clutches of laziness, one of which is:
” O Allah, I seek refuge in You from grief and sadness, from weakness and from laziness, from miserliness and from cowardice, from | being overcome by debt and from being overpowered by men (i.e. other people)”
Laziness leads to sins which can be easily avoided. One of the most important obligations which is put off due to laziness is salat (namaz). How often do we intend to offer our salat but keep on delaying until there is no more time to offer them; or offer it hurriedly at the very last minute.
- Abdullah Ibn Masu’d (RAU) said:” I once asked Allah’s Messenger (SAW) which is the best of deeds. He replied, prayer at its correct time.”
- Our Prophet (SAW) once said:” The difference between a believer and an idol worshiper is abandoning the prayer.”
Laziness has other negative effects as well. Everyone knows he is supposed to look after his extended family members and take care of his neighbors as well; because they have many rights over you; yet we fail to find time to do so because of our laziness. We indulge in idle chitchat, watch TV sitting lazily but we don’t find time to do what will be beneficial to us in the Hereafter.
Every morning and evening, we should recite this dua:
We have entered a new day ( night[in the evening])and with it all dominion is Allah’s. Praise is to Allah. None has the right to be worshipped but Allah alone, Who has no partner. To Allah belongs the dominion, and to Him is the praise and He is Able to do all things. My Lord, I ask You for the goodness of this day and of the days that come after it, and I seek refuge in You from the evil of this day and of the days that come after it. My Lord, I seek refuge in You from laziness and helpless old age. My Lord, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of Hell-fire, and from the punishment of the grave.
