Qasas-ul-Ambiya:Talut and Bani Israel

Bani Israel accepted Talut as their king after much argument and specifically after At-Tabut ( Tabut-e-Sakinah) was brought by the angels.

Talut and his army started their march. When they came across a river, (some historians say it was river Jordan), Talut said: “Allah is going to test you by this river. Whoever will drink from it, will not be mine, except he who drinks very little. Whoever doesn’t, will be mine.”

As expected, very few of Bani Israel obeyed him.

Bara’ bin Azib (RAU) narrated that many Companions of the Prophet (SAW) used to remark that during Ghuzwa’ Badr that many companions of Prophet (SAW) were there as were the comrades of  Talut ( who did not drink water from the river), and their number was a little more than 300.

When they had crossed the river, the believers and Talut saw great armies of their enemy; Jalut. They said to each other that they had little hope for winning. But some of the staunch believers said that very often people with strong faith had over come great armies, so they should try their best and leave the rest to Allah.

  • “Then when Talût (Saul) set out with the army, he said: “Verily! Allâh will try you by a river. So whoever drinks thereof, he is not of me, and whoever tastes it not, he is of me, except him who takes (thereof) in the hollow of his hand.” Yet, they drank thereof, all, except a few of them. So when he had crossed it (the river), he and those who believed with him, they said: “We have no power this day against Jalût (Goliath) and his hosts.” But those who knew with certainty that they were to meet their Lord, said: “How often a small group overcame a mighty host by Allâh’s Leave?” And Allâh is with As-Sâbirin (the patient ones, etc.)”

  • “And when they advanced to meet Jalût (Goliath) and his forces, they invoked: “Our Lord! Pour forth on us patience and make us victorious over the disbelieving people.”

So, with Allah’s nusrah, Dawood (AS) [David] killed Jalut, and Bani Israel won the war. After the death of Shamoel (AS) and Talut , Dawood (AS) was bestowed with the kingdom as well as prophet hood.
