Theft in Islam

Theft is a very bad issue of every culture, society and religion. In Islam theft is forbidden and there are very harsh rules and punishments for thief. In Islam it is a very big sin and in many places in Qur’an ALLAH almighty has announced the punishments for thief. Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W) also emphasized to avoid this bad thing. In Islam a punishment for theft is to cut off the hand of the thief. It is stated in Qur’an.

“[As for] the thief, the male and the female, amputate their hands in recompense for what they earned (i.e. committed) as a deterrent (punishment) from ALLAH. And ALLAH is exalted in might and wise.” (Qur’an 5.38)

In Islamic point of view, a theft is a corrupted person in the society and if he is left without any punishment, it will not only encourage him but at the same time will motivate more people to do so. The punishment for thief is applying in all cases regardless that how worthy thing is stolen. The punishment is for all from a person who seal a small piece of rope to a person who steal a very big property, wealth or any other precious thing. Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W) said.

“May ALLAH curse the thief who steals and egg and has his hand cut off, or steals a rope and has his hand cut off.” (AL-Bukhari)

In the eyes of Islam it is important to punish the thief, because it is i8mportant to forbid other people from committing the same thing. It is also important as it will make them stop and as a result a peaceful and secure society will come into existence. Nowadays, theft is increasing with each passing day and the main reason is that people are not following the teachings of Islam and as that of Qur’an. This is the main reason of insecurity in societies.
