From the city of Mansehra at a distance of 30 kms Balakot city is situated, it is a town in the North West Frontier Province of Pakistan. It is the most well known tourist destination, and is also the first tourists stop who are visiting Kaghan Valley to the North West Frontier Pakistan. The famous river Kunhar runs through the city. Balakot is also the main city of this region. It is also considered as main city of Balakot Tahsil and many smaller villages and towns are in the surroundings of the city.
In the year 1818 after strong resistance from its population the Sikhs attacked Mansehra. As Mansehra region was under the control of Sikhs, it is linked to Punjab. Shah Ismail Shaheed and Syed Ahmed Shaheed with the help of Mujahideen consisting of Syeds of Kaghan and Swatis of Balakot set many attacks and revolts in opposition to Sikhs.
On 6th May 1831 during the tough battle Syed Ahmad Shaheed and Shah Ismail Shaheed with large number of their followers were killed in Balakot the central mosque was named after the name of Syed Ahmed Shaheed. Balakot is one of the most beautiful cities for seeing natural sights and one can visit its beauty but its natural beauty has been destroyed due to earth quick on 8th October, 2008, but now Government has restored most of its beauty, and trying to make it again beautiful and attractive for tourists.
